How much does the bar weigh?
A standard men's Olympic bar weighs 20 kg (45 lb) and the women's bar 15 kg (33 lb). Technique and training bars weigh 10 to 15 kg. Always add the bar to the total: 100 kg on the bar is 40 kg of plates per side plus the 20 kg bar.
Plates per side, not in total
A barbell is loaded symmetrically: every plate you put on one side goes on the other too. That's why this calculator gives you plates per side. For 60 kg with a 20 kg bar you need 20 kg per side: one 20 kg plate on each end.
Olympic plate colors
Under the IWF standard, competition plates follow a color code: 25 kg red, 20 kg blue, 15 kg yellow, 10 kg green. Our diagram uses the same colors so you can read a load at a glance.
