Closest loadable weight

Updated

Programs and percentages produce numbers like 187.5 lb that the plates on the rack can't make. LoadPR does not stop at an error: it shows the closest weight you can load and the plates for it, so you can get on with the set.

Closest loadable weight for 187.5 lb: 185 lb, one 45 and one 25 lb plate on one side of the bar
Closest loadable weight for 187.5 lb: 185 lb, one 45 and one 25 lb plate on one side of the bar

Why some weights can't be loaded

A barbell is loaded in pairs. Every plate goes on both sleeves, so the total always goes up by twice the plate. With the standard pound set the smallest plate is 2.5 lb, which means the total moves in 5 lb steps: 185, 190, 195. A target of 187.5 lb sits between two of those steps.

In kilograms the standard set goes down to 1.25 kg plates, so the steps are 2.5 kg. A target of 102 kg falls between 100 kg and 102.5 kg.

Odd targets are common. Percentages rarely land on a step: 85% of 225 lb is 191.25 lb, and 90% is 202.5 lb.

What LoadPR shows

LoadPR finds the heaviest load at or below your target and the lightest load at or above it, then shows whichever is closer. When both are the same distance away, it picks the lighter one.

For 187.5 lb on a 45 lb bar the two neighbors are 185 lb and 190 lb, each 2.5 lb away. LoadPR shows 185 lb: one 45 and one 25 per side. The line under the weight still says what you asked for, 100% of 187.5 lbs, so you know the bar is a little light.

For 191.25 lb the neighbors are 190 lb and 195 lb. 190 lb is closer, so LoadPR shows 190 lb: one 45, one 25 and one 2.5 per side.

The same rule runs on Apple Watch and in the Calculate Plates action for Siri, so all three give the same number.

Down or up

Taking the nearer load means LoadPR sometimes goes a little over the target and sometimes a little under. For 202.5 lb, 200 lb and 205 lb are both 2.5 lb away, so the tie goes to the lighter 200 lb. For 203 lb, 205 lb is nearer, so LoadPR shows 205 lb: one 45 and one 35 per side.

If you would rather always stay under, or always go over, use the plate calculator on this website. It lists the closest load below and the closest load above, with the plates for each.

When your plates are limited

The closest weight depends on the plates you have, not only on their sizes. The free version uses the standard set with two of each plate per side, and LoadPR searches that set exactly, so it never shows a load that needs a third 45.

With LoadPR+ you enter the plates your gym or garage really has, including how many of each. If a home gym has no small change plates, the steps get bigger, and LoadPR rounds to the loads those plates can make.

If a target is beyond what the plates can load at all, LoadPR shows the heaviest load they allow and adds a note with the real target, so you know the bar is short.

How far off it can be

With the standard plates, the closest load is never more than half a step from the target: at most 2.5 lb with the pound set and 1.25 kg with the kilogram set. For training, that gap rarely matters, and you can always type a different number if your program needs an exact load.

How to find the closest loadable weight

  1. Enter the target. Tap the weight and type the number from your program, such as 187.5, or pick a lift and turn the percentage wheel.
  2. Read the result. The large number is the closest weight you can load; the line under it shows what you asked for.
  3. Load the plates. Put the plates from the drawing on one side of the bar, then the same plates on the other side.

Questions about this feature

Why can't I load 187.5 lb on a barbell?

With a 45 lb bar and plates down to 2.5 lb, the total moves in 5 lb steps, because every plate goes on both sides. 187.5 lb sits between 185 lb and 190 lb.

Does LoadPR round up or down?

To whichever loadable weight is closer. On a tie it takes the lighter one, so 187.5 lb becomes 185 lb and 191.25 lb becomes 190 lb.

Will the closest weight ever need plates I don't have?

No. LoadPR searches the plates in the set it is using, including how many of each, so every answer can be built from that set.

Can I see both the load below and the load above?

The app shows the closer one. The plate calculator on this website lists both, with the plates for each.

What is the smallest step in kilograms?

With 1.25 kg as the smallest plate, the total moves in 2.5 kg steps, such as 100 kg, 102.5 kg and 105 kg.

Does Apple Watch show the same closest weight?

Yes. The iPhone app, the Apple Watch app and the Calculate Plates action for Siri use the same rule and the same plates, so they agree.
