How much does a weight plate weigh?
Short answer: the big plate in most gyms weighs 45 lb, which is 20.41 kg. In a kilo gym the matching plate is 20 kg, which is 44.09 lb. When lifters say "a plate" they mean one of these. A plate weighs what is stamped on it, and the tables below give every common plate in both units.
Why a 45 lb plate is not 20 kg
Pound plates are made in round pounds and kilo plates in round kilos, so the two big plates are close but not equal. One kilogram is 2.2046 lb:
- 45 lb ÷ 2.2046 = 20.41 kg
- 20 kg × 2.2046 = 44.09 lb
The gap is small for one plate and grows as you load more. A 45 lb bar with two 45s on each side is 225 lb, which is 102.06 kg. A 20 kg bar with two 20 kg plates on each side is 100 kg, which is 220.46 lb. Both get called "two plates", but they are not the same load.
Pound plates in kg
| Plate | Weight in kg |
|---|---|
| 45 lb | 20.41 |
| 35 lb | 15.88 |
| 25 lb | 11.34 |
| 10 lb | 4.54 |
| 5 lb | 2.27 |
| 2.5 lb | 1.13 |
A 25 lb plate is 11.34 kg and a 10 lb plate is 4.54 kg, so pound plates never land on round kilos.
Kilo plates in pounds
| Plate | Weight in lb |
|---|---|
| 25 kg | 55.12 |
| 20 kg | 44.09 |
| 15 kg | 33.07 |
| 10 kg | 22.05 |
| 5 kg | 11.02 |
| 2.5 kg | 5.51 |
| 1.25 kg | 2.76 |
The 25 kg plate (55.12 lb) is heavier than a 45 lb plate, which surprises lifters who move from a pound gym to a kilo gym. On competition plates the colors tell them apart: 25 kg is red and 20 kg is blue (see Olympic plate colors).
A plate's weight vs the bar total
The number on a plate is the weight of that one plate, not the weight on the bar. The load you lift is the bar plus every plate on both ends, so a pair of 45 lb plates adds 90 lb to the bar, and a pair of 20 kg plates adds 40 kg. For bar totals with 1 to 6 plates on each side, see how much is 1 to 6 plates on each side.
Bumper plates vs iron plates
A 45 lb bumper and a 45 lb iron plate weigh the same. The bumper is made of rubber, which is lighter for its size than iron, so it is thicker and takes more room on the sleeve; how thick depends on the model. Most full-size bumpers are 450 mm (about 17.7 in) across, the competition size, so the bar sits at the same height whichever bumper is on it; some light bumpers are smaller. Competition (calibrated) plates are made to a tight weight tolerance. Ordinary gym plates can be off by a little, and how much depends on the maker.
Olympic and standard plates
A 45 lb plate with a 2-inch hole (Olympic) and a 45 lb plate with a 1-inch hole (standard) weigh the same. The hole decides which bar the plate fits, not what it weighs. See Olympic vs standard plates.
Common mistakes
- Treating 20 kg and 45 lb as equal. A 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, not 45, and on a heavy bar the difference adds up.
- Rounding a kilo to 2 lb. A kilo is 2.2046 lb, so a 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, not 40.
- Leaving out the bar. The plates are only part of the load; a 45 lb bar with one 45 on each side is 135 lb.
- Reading the wrong number. Some plates are stamped in both lb and kg. Check which unit is the main one before you add them up, or use the kg to lb converter.
