How do you count the weight on a barbell?

Updated

Short answer: add up the plates on one side, double that, then add the bar. A 45 lb bar with a 45, a 25 and a 5 on each side is 45 + 2 × (45 + 25 + 5) = 195 lb. A properly loaded bar carries the same plates on both ends, so you only need to read one side.

Per side:1 × 451 × 251 × 5
Total on bar: 195 lb · Bar: 45 lb

Example: a 45, a 25 and a 5 on each side

You walk up to a bar in a pound gym and see three plates on the near end: a 45, a 25 and a 5. Count it in three steps:

  1. Plates on one side: 45 + 25 + 5 = 75 lb.
  2. Both sides: 2 × 75 = 150 lb.
  3. Add the bar: 150 + 45 = 195 lb.

The order matters only for reading: the biggest plate sits closest to the middle of the bar, and the small ones are on the outside. Read from the inside out and say the numbers as you go.

Counting in kilos

The rule is the same in a kilo gym, with a 20 kg bar. A 25, a 15 and a 5 on each side:

  • One side: 25 + 15 + 5 = 45 kg.
  • Both sides plus the bar: 20 + 2 × 45 = 110 kg.

Different plates can make the same total: a 25 and a 20 on each side is also 110 kg. On a 15 kg women's bar the first set of plates makes 105 kg, so check which bar you have; how much a barbell weighs lists the common ones.

Reading competition plates by color

On calibrated kilo plates the color tells you the weight before you can read the number: red 25 kg, blue 20 kg, yellow 15 kg, green 10 kg, white 5 kg. A red and a blue on each side of a 20 kg bar is 110 kg. At a meet, add the two 2.5 kg competition collars and it is 115 kg. Pound bumpers sometimes borrow the same colors for different weights, so in a pound gym read the number on the plate. All the colors are in Olympic plate colors.

Kilo plates in a pound gym

Mixed units are where counting goes wrong. A 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, not 45 lb, so convert every plate to one unit before you add. A 45 lb bar with one 20 kg plate on each side:

  • In pounds: 45 + 2 × 44.09 = 133.18 lb, not 135 lb.
  • In kilos: the 45 lb bar is 20.41 kg, so 20.41 + 2 × 20 = 60.41 kg.

How much a plate weighs lists every plate in both units, and the kg to lb converter handles the totals.

Collars and the two sides

Spring clips weigh little and most lifters leave them out of the count. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each, so they add 5 kg to the bar; see how much barbell collars weigh. If the two sides are not loaded the same, do not double one side: add both sides separately, then the bar, and fix the bar before you lift, because an uneven bar tips toward the heavy end.

Let a tool add it up

What's on the bar does this count for you: tap the plates you see on one side, pick the bar and collars, and it shows the total in kg and lb. To go the other way, from a target weight to the plates per side, use the plate calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the bar. A 45, a 25 and a 5 on each side are 150 lb of plates; the bar makes it 195 lb.
  • Counting one side only. Plates go on both ends, so each plate you see counts twice.
  • Assuming every bar weighs 45 lb. A women's bar is 15 kg (33 lb), and specialty bars vary by model.
  • Treating a 20 kg plate as a 45. A 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, and over several plates the gap adds up.
  • Reading colors in a pound gym. Bumper colors are not a standard there; trust the number stamped on the plate.

FAQ

How do you count the weight on a barbell?

Add the plates on one side, double it and add the bar. A 45, a 25 and a 5 on each side of a 45 lb bar is 45 + 2 × 75 = 195 lb.

How much weight is on the bar with a 45 and a 25 on each side?

185 lb on a 45 lb bar: 45 + 2 × (45 + 25).

How much is a red and a blue plate on each side?

110 kg on a 20 kg bar, since red is 25 kg and blue is 20 kg. With two 2.5 kg competition collars it is 115 kg.

How do I count kg plates on a lb bar?

Convert the plates first: a 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, so one on each side of a 45 lb bar is 133.18 lb, not 135 lb.
